Modesto streamlines meter performance with Meter Health Analytics
By instrumenting 200 commercial and industrial meters with Olea’s Meter Health Analytics™, the City of Modesto uncovered under-performing assets, prioritized repairs, and protected revenue—all while saving nearly 70 million gallons of water.
Challenge
Modesto’s utilities team manages a diverse, fast-growing customer base and depends on large commercial, industrial, and institutional meters for nearly 10% of annual revenue. Traditional flow testing missed issues and required intrusive shutdowns, putting accuracy and customer trust at risk.
Solution
Olea Edge Analytics deployed optical, acoustic, and hall-effect sensors in rugged enclosures across 200 priority meters. The MHA platform delivered monthly diagnostics with specific repair recommendations—covering issues from crossover valve errors to measuring element failures—so crews could address problems in a single visit.
Results
In the first year, the city identified 69 under-performing meters and repaired 33 of the most critical units. The data backed targeted capital planning and proved the return on investment for continuous monitoring.
“Olea’s Meter Health Analytics has become an essential tool in our utility operations. The ability to monitor our largest meters and receive detailed monthly diagnostics has allowed us to address issues we would have never known about otherwise.” Jeremy Parnell, Water Superintendent, City of Modesto
